The Silk District

Completed

Whitechapel is undergoing a remarkable transformation, reclaiming its place as a vibrant part of the East End. The Silk District is a leading development that has injected new life into this historic area, creating a dynamic and modern community.

Working alongside developer Mount Anvil, L&Q, and leasing agents Compton, we were tasked with the complete design of premium Cat A and ready-to-work office spaces within the Silk District project. Our focus was on designing versatile spaces that future tenants could easily tailor to their needs, while also embedding a sense of local heritage and history into the environment.

The 34,800 sq ft Cat A space draws on Whitechapel’s textile heritage, with the design taking inspiration from the ribbons and silks historically produced in the area. This theme is represented through modern elements, such as the installation of long, sleek lighting strips that give the space both visual continuity and historical depth.

In addition to these influences, we incorporated references to the iconic Redd Lyon playhouse, which once stood nearby. This is reflected in the bold and elegant design of the bathrooms, where large, statement mirrors bring a sense of drama and grandeur to the space.

The chosen colour scheme complements the building’s existing architecture, balancing natural tones of green and neutral shades with the exposed mechanical and electrical systems in the ceiling. Large windows and glass partition walls flood the space with daylight, creating a bright and energised atmosphere. Indoor plants were carefully selected to echo the trees around the development, seamlessly connecting the interior with its surroundings.

Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design process, resulting in a BREEAM Excellent rating. This ensures that the space not only meets modern expectations of comfort and aesthetics but also provides future tenants with a workplace that actively supports environmental sustainability.
